Sunset Dunes

Same raccoon, new beach. Dig through the dunes at the edge of San Francisco, spray the gulls, crabs and sneaker waves until they pop, and see how deep the sand goes.

Save the Dunes

Vote NO on G

The game is set on Sunset Dunes, the park that used to be the Upper Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard. Proposition G would reopen it to cars on weekdays, closing it to private vehicles only from Friday at 6 p.m. to Monday at 4 a.m. and on holidays. Here's the case for keeping it a park.

Voters already decided

In 2022 voters rejected cars on the highway every day. In 2024, 55% approved Prop K, which made the road a permanent park. G asks the same question a third time.

People actually use it

Walk SF reports that Sunset Dunes is now the city's third most visited green space, and that more than half of visits happen on weekdays, which are the days G would hand back to cars.

The ocean is coming anyway

This stretch sits on an eroding shoreline. Keeping a road there means fighting rising water and beach erosion. A park is the more climate-resilient use of the coast.

Safer on foot

When cars ran the road, people walking had only a narrow, hilly path beside traffic. The park gives the coast to people on foot, on bikes and on skates.

It costs money

The city Controller's office estimates that letting cars back on could cost San Francisco more than $10 million.

And it isn't simple

Reopening the road to cars would need a coastal development permit from the California Coastal Commission, and possibly other approvals.

Same game, same dunes, different look. Pick one and hit play. More flavors are on the way.

Play Fog & Sand

The dunes are real

The surface rolls in random dunes up to four rows high, and every one is diggable sand. Walk up and over them, dig straight down from a crest, or tunnel up into one from underneath. They come out different every game.

Walking sideways along the surface climbs a dune rather than digging into its side. Watch for the signs planted in the sand.

How to play

Dig

Desktop: ←↑↓→ or WASD. Phone: touch the left pad and slide.

Spray

Hold Space, or hold the Spray button with your right thumb. Keep pumping until they pop. Auto-aim is on, and on the dunes your spray reaches farther and follows the crest. Press T to turn auto-aim off.

Drop rocks

Dig out from under the junk and it falls. Crush two or more locals at once for a big bonus.

Open chambers

Dig out a buried room and it handles monsters for you. Sewers drown them, offices trap them in meetings, bars start happy hour.

Grab power-ups

Glowing pickups give long, triple or all-way spray, a magnet, extra lives, and the haze.

Swap weapons

Phone flashlight blinds everything in a long beam. Zippo flame is short and hot, two pumps a hit. The dollar-bill gun pays monsters to leave you alone. Each lasts 15 seconds, and they turn up on the dunes too.

Collect history

Every layer hides its own junk. Finish a layer's set for a bonus. Your collection carries over between runs.

P pauses, M toggles music.

Locals

Forty-two locals, from sand fleas to the rival raccoon. Gulls and crabs on the sand, coyotes out at dusk. Further down it gets foggier, then it gets expensive.
